What is BIS?
The Bachelor
of Interdisciplinary Studies is a fairly new and unique program offered at Arizona State University, This degree integrates two concentrations into one learning experience.
The difference between having a B.I.S. in Business and Economics and two separate bachelors,
one in Business and one in Ecnomics is that with a B.I.S. , everything studied and all courses taken are approached with the
insight of both the concentration areas, rather than each separate.
I chose the BIS program because...
The two concentration areas I chose are Business and Economics. I chose Business because I believe that regardless what profession one decided to enter, knowing core principles
of business are necessary to know. This concentration touches the subjects of accounting, marketing, management, finance,
and economics. Economics always seemed interesting to me and a necessity to understand why people, the government, and the
world functions the way it was, which is why I chose my second concentration to be ecnomics.
What I learned in the four BIS classes...
The BIS degree brings together the two concentration areas through a serious
of four core courses. BIS 301 explained clearly what exactly the Bachelor of
Interdisciplinary Studies is, the history and present culture of the program. Throughout the semester, students viewed different
aspects of life in the eyes of their concentration. For example, we studied the effects of the hurricanes that hit Louisiana. I looked at the disaster in a business and economical view. BIS302 is a research course, where students chose a topic and conducted primary research,
based on their concentrations. BIS401 is a applied studies course, where student acquire internships in their fields and maintain
a journal throughtout the eight-week program. Every week, students write papers reflecting what was learned in their internship,
how their two concentration areas are applied, and what improvements could be made with the knowledge the student has from
their B.I.S. The BIS402 course is slightly different based on the professor and course of study taken. The one I enrolled
in is titled “A Self-Constructed Life” where students read two motivational books and reflect on the themes discussed
in each. Also, students find their purpose in life and set up mini-goals to reach their final destination.
Another learning experience I had...
Another
recent course I took was enrolling in Landmark Curriculum for Living. It is a three step program that truly changed my life
and the way I viewed everything. I use to hold on to the past and blame other people for everything and never think I was
good enough. With my newfound knowledge, I truly have control over my life and created possibilities that have exceeded any
goal I have ever had. Thanks to Landmark, I truly believe in myself and others.
